Air source heat pump?

What is an

Heat pumps offer a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based heating systems commonly used in UK households. Operating on electricity, they boast three to four times greater efficiency compared to traditional heating methods, including electric storage heaters, radiators, and boilers.

Air source heat pumps achieve the same level of warmth in your home using only a fraction of the energy consumed by other heating systems. The potential for cost savings when transitioning to a heat pump depends largely on the heating system you're replacing.

This in turn, warms up rooms in your residence through either radiators or underfloor heating, and it can additionally heat water stored in a hot water cylinder for your household's hot taps, showers, and baths.

How does an air source heat pump work?

An air source heat pump works similarly to a refrigerator but in reverse. Here's how it operates:

  1. The ASHP absorbs heat from the outdoor air, even in cold temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F), using a refrigerant fluid circulating in the outdoor coil.

  2. The absorbed heat is then compressed to raise its temperature. A compressor in the ASHP pressurizes the refrigerant, making it suitable for heating indoor spaces.

  3. The heated refrigerant fluid flows through an indoor coil, releasing its thermal energy to warm the indoor air.

  4. The heated air is distributed throughout the building via ductwork or wall-mounted units, providing cozy indoor heating.

  5. The ASHP can heat water stored in a hot water cylinder, supplying hot water for taps, showers, and baths.

  6. During warmer months, the ASHP can reverse its operation to provide cooling. It absorbs heat from indoors and releases it outdoors, effectively cooling indoor spaces.

Is an Air source heat pump

Right for me?

Any home with outdoor space can benefit from an air source heat pump. Here are some factors to consider when deciding if it's right for you:

  • Space Requirements: While the outdoor unit is discreet, it requires sufficient space for good airflow. Placing it in a sunny spot can enhance its performance.

  • Heating System Compatibility: Air source heat pumps can be connected to existing radiators, but they may not reach the same temperatures as gas or oil heating systems. They are better suited for underfloor or warm air heating systems, which operate at lower temperatures.

  • Insulation: Since air source heat pumps operate at lower temperatures, proper insulation is essential to retain heat inside your home.

If you're seeking a reliable heating source that also reduces heating costs and carbon footprint, an air source heat pump could be a valuable investment.
