For every kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity used to run the heat pump in a properly insulated building, three to four kWh of thermal energy can be obtained for free. In comparison to boilers, which typically operate at around 92% efficiency, a heat pump's efficiency can reach about 400%.
A £5,000 upfront grant is available to homeowners under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to help offset the cost of installation for air source heat pumps.
